Goannas in Lamington National Park at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat
Goannas or monitor lizards are a common sight in Australia. You don’t have to go too far to see the smaller water dragons that live in the tropical gardens at Moorings on Cavill.

There are over 20 different species that have adapted to different habitats. They may all look very similar but there is a big difference in their size. The largest Australian monitor lizard, the Perentie. This can grow over two meters long and its tiny relative, the short-tailed monitor grows only to 20 cm.
All goannas are a dark grey, olive or brown colour and most of them show a pattern of lighter colored of grey, white or yellow spots, rings, blotches or stripes on their body. These designs and patterns vary between the species.but also between younger monitor’s lizards and adult lizards.
They have very loose skin under the goanna’s neck to make the neck look bigger than the head. When they are scared the monitor lizard puff up these loose flaps so they look very dangerous but they are unique Australian Gold Coast Animal and Birds .

The Australian brush turkey or Australian brush-turkey is called the scrub turkey or bush turkey is a very common on Burleigh headland. Just take a short walk up the hill and you will see them along the bush tracks.

Brush-turkeys feed on insects, seeds and fallen fruits that are exposed by turkeys raking the leaf litter or breaking open rotten logs with their large feet. Their food is obtained from the ground and the birds also feed on ripening fruits among tree branches.
The Australian Brush-turkey incubates its eggs in a large mound. The male usually builds a single large mound approximately 4 m in diameter and 1 m high. Eggs are laid by several females in a single mound. The eggs are incubated by the heat given off by the rotting vegetation.
The male brush turkey maintains a constant temperature of 33 – 38°C by digging holes in the mound and inserting his bill to check the heat, then adding and removing vegetable matter as required.
Before the eggs hatch, many fall prey to predators such as goannas. After hatching, the brush turkey chicks burrow out of the mound, at which point they are left to fend for themselves.
